root canal treatment (RCT) or endodontics

Root canal treatment is most common procedure for relieving tooth pain

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure aimed at treating infection or damage to the innermost part of a tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp is a soft tissue containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, located within the tooth's root canal.

When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, cracks or chips in the tooth, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and lead to abscess formation if left untreated. Root canal treatment involves removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the root canal space, and then filling and sealing it to prevent further infection.

The procedure typically involves the following steps:

  1. Assessment: The dentist will examine the tooth and may take X-rays to determine the extent of the infection and assess the anatomy of the root canals.
  2. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding area, ensuring the patient is comfortable throughout the procedure.
  3. Access: The dentist creates an opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
  4. Cleaning and Shaping: Using specialized instruments, the dentist removes the infected or damaged pulp tissue and thoroughly cleans and shapes the root canals to facilitate filling.
  5. Disinfection: The root canals are flushed with antibacterial solutions to eliminate any remaining bacteria and reduce the risk of reinfection.
  6. Filling: After the root canals are cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal the space and prevent bacteria from re-entering.
  7. Restoration: Once the root canal treatment is completed, the access opening in the tooth is filled with a temporary or permanent filling material. In some cases, a dental crown may be placed to protect and strengthen the tooth, especially if significant tooth structure has been lost.

Root canal treatment is highly successful in saving infected or damaged teeth, relieving pain, and restoring oral health. It allows patients to retain their natural teeth and avoid extraction, which can have implications for oral function and aesthetics.
